Smokin Aces - the review Options

Smokin Aces is a pretty good movie. I'm not sure why Smokin Aces didn't do better in theaters, there seems to be a lot in Smokin Aces for a lot of different people.

I just realized that there is a significance to the Smokin spelling. The character in the movie is a magician celebrity patterened after the "Frank Sinatra Legend". This magican is presented as a legit superstar who decided he wanted to hangout with and live the life of a mobster. The character is nicknamed Aces. So, Smokin Aces becomes another way of saying Killing Aces.

Basically, someone puts out a $1 million dollar hit on a guy holed up in a hotel room in Vegas. The amount of the hit brings out a weird assortment of hit men and hit women eager to kill the guy in the hotel and each other.

There is a huge outrageous gun battle sequence in the movie that has to be seen to be believed. There are also several scenes in Smokin Aces that are just so far "out there" that you just have to sit up and take notice. For example,

1. Ben Affleck is in the movie and he gets killed. Affleck is shown on the DVD saying that Smokin Aces is the first movie that he gets killed in and it is the first movie where he has to wear a squid (a device that explodes blood to make it look like the wearer has been shot). Well,

When Ben Aflleck is shot and killed, the crazy Red Neck Guy who killed Affleck bends down and apologizes to Ben Affleck. The Red Neck guy manipulates Affleck's mouth with his hands to make it appear that he is having a conversation with the dead Aflleck.

2. There is a scene in which a guy who has been shot, mutilated and dumped into a freezing river manages to crawl to a house for help. When the guy rings the door bell, a hyper-active Ritalin addicted Asian kid answers the door and says: "Whatcha want, beauch?"

3. There is an actor (Chris Pine) who plays one of the Tremor Brothers - three crazy, gonzo, Neo-Nazi redneck brother hitmen. This character (Darwin Tremor) is so over the top, he almost upstages the big gun battle. Darwin apologies to a guy for chopping off three of the guy's fingers when he places car keys on one of the guy's remaining fingers. He says: "Sorry about all of that".


Chris Pine as Darwin Tremor. One of three Tremor Brothers. He and his brothers are Neo-Nazi rednecks/assassins. They manage to kill Jack Dupree and his team, and sneak into the hotel. They start killing the guards and his brothers are killed by Sir Ivy. Darwin tries to kill him but Georgia comes and stops him. Darwin manages to escape by jumping in the elevator, using the distraction created by Georgia's initial attraction to Sir Ivy. Darwin gets away by coming out of the elevator crying and waving a FBI badge. He gets to the parking lot to find Dupree's friend Hollis waiting for him. Darwin apologizes for shooting him and even jokes about the Israel hit. Hollis simply asks for the keys to his car back in exchange for letting Darwin live. Darwin duly returns the keys but just when he thinks he is free, Hollis kills him by firing him in the back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokin'_Aces

There is a lot of detail to the characters in Smokin Aces. It is clear that someone went to a lot of trouble to give each character in the movie a personality and a history. There is also this Way of Speaking in Smokin Aces that is a little hard to describe. For example, I can't watch NYPD Blue because of the idiot way the characters speak in NYPD. Several of the characters in Smokin Aces speak in this EGO SPEAK that is similar in a way to the idiot NYPD Blue Speak but not as annoying. For example, Common (a Black Male Rapper who plays Aces' right hand man) says to Alicia Keyes (a Black Female Singer who plays a hitwoman): "You know you saved this Black Man." Later own, Common says: "Girl, you know you make a xegga fall hard". Alicia Keyes saves Common from being killed and they fall for each other.

I think people who do get to see Smokin Aces will enjoy it. Smokin Aces will probably be huge on Cable.
