Dreamcatcher The movie Dreamcatcher was on TNT again today. In the movie, one of the characters describes how he organizes memories in his head. The way this character describes how he stores memories in his head is remarkably similar to the way a person with synesthesia described how he stored memories in his head. Synesthesia is a condition in which a person experiences everything with all five senses. For example, we all associate music/sound with hearing . However, a person with synesthesia would associate a taste, a visual, and a feel with music/sound. I initially learned what synesthesia was and about the book “Mind of a Mnemonic” from Marilyn Fergueson’s book “The Brain Revolution” In the book “Mind of a Mnemonic”, the references to how the person with synesthesia (“S”) viewed memories comes about as a result of S describing what he had to do to actually not remember something (S had an unlimited memory and could not actually forget anything). S described that if he didn’t want to experience some memory, he imagined placing the memory in the shadow of a building in the place in his head where he stored memories. In this way, S explained that when he walked down the street, in his head, and viewed memories, he would, more likely than not, not be able to see a memory that was stored in the shadow of a building. A character in the movie Dreamcatcher (Jonesy, I think) describes memories stored in his head in a manner very similar to the way S described memories in the book Mind of a Mnemonic. The character Jonsey refers to the place in his mind where he stores his memories as his memory warehouse. Jonesy imagined having a private room on the third floor of his memory warehouse with a desk that had a special drawer full of files that contained memories he did not want to experience. Jonesy visualized going into his memory warehouse, going up to the third floor, going to the desk and opening a special desk drawer to place the lyrics to a song he did not want to remember in the drawer. Jonsey is taken over by an alien entity in the movie and he imagines his real personality hiding from the alien in his special memory warehouse. The big question here is: “Did the writer of Dreamcatcher read the book Mind of a Mnemonic or, is the way humans imagine memory storage a universal consciousness thing? Dreamcatcher is apparently based on a Stephen King story. The Movie Dreamcatcher There is something extremely uncomfortable about the movie Dreamcatcher. I’ve been trying to think of a word to describe what watching Dreamcatcher is like, and uncomfortable is the best I can come up with. Almost everything about how the characters in Dreamcatcher behave and everything about what they say and how they say it appears to be subversive. What I mean is that everything the characters in Dreamcatcher do and say appear to be intended to convey something other than what is presented on the surface. There is a scene in the tv miniseries of Dune in which two characters are talking. However, in addition to carrying on one conversation orally, the two characters are carrying on an entirely different conversation with each other, simultaneously, with their hands using sign language. This is the effect of Dreamcatcher. There is a story being presented on the surface in Dreamcatcher, however, the movie appears to be transmitting something completely different than what appears on the screen. I just can’t figure out of Dreamcatcher’s effect is accidental or intentional. Timothy Olyphant There is something about Timonthy Olyphant in Dreamcatcher. I keep getting the feeling that I know Olypahnt from somewhere, but I don’t remember seeing any of the movies or tv shows listed for him. There is something about this guy’s face. I did see the movie Go, but, I don't remember anything about Olyphant in the movie. TIMOTHY OLYPHANT (Pete) received great notice as the drug dealer 'Todd Gaines' in Doug Liman's critically applauded film "Go". Olyphant most recently finished shooting the pilot episode for the new HBO western series "Deadwood" created by David Milch and directed by Walter Hill. Timothy stars as 'Seth Bullock,' the famous Marshall from Montana, who came to the rogue town of Deadwood to instill some law and order with the help of Carradine's 'Wild Bill Hickok.' There is a scene in Dreamcatcher in which Olyphant basically has a rather long monologue. Olyphant is talking and in the middle of his monologue he says: “I have to pee”. The effect of this is rather amazing. The effect of Olyphant’s face and almost everything he does in this movie is rather amazing. about Dreamcatcher After four friends perform a heroic act as children and gain psychic powers in return, they reunite every winter in Maine to hunt, drink and celebrate the special bond they share. However, this year's reunion is ruined when a lost and disoriented hunter stumbles upon their camp mumbling about strange lights in the sky. Soon after, horrific creatures begin to emerge and a heavily armed government operative, led by the psychotic Colonel Curtis (Freeman), attempts to take over the area. Challenged to stop this alien force, the friends must confront an unparalleled horror while they take part in an all-out battle to rescue the fate of humanity. -------------------- |
